Arthur Ashe was born in Richmond on July 10, 1943. In 1950, Arthur’s mother dies of complications from surgery. Dr. Walter Johnson who coached Althea Gibson, became Arthur Ashe’s mentor in 1953. Ashe became the first African-American to play in the Maryland Boy’s Championship in 1957, it was his first integrated event. Arthur enrolls at Sumner High School for his senior year in
